FAVOURITE 1994 HINDI MOVIE

Hum Aapke Hain Kaun...! (Hindi: हम आपके हैं कौन, Urdu: ہم آپ کے ہیں کون, translation: Who Am I to You?) is a 1994 Hindi film directed by Sooraj Barjatya, and produced by Rajshri Productions. It is a remake of Rajshri's earlier movie Nadiya Ke Paar (1982). Hum Aapke Hain Kaun is considered to be one of the most successful hindi films ever. The film is a story of two Indian families and the relationships between them, celebrating Indian culture using modern production values. It is noted for its lavish depictions of North Indian wedding ceremonies. Its soundtrack, including an unusually large number of 14 songs, was scored by Raamlaxman. Hum Aapke Hain Kaun stars Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit, two of the top Bollywood stars of the 1990s. The film was very influential and inspired young filmmakers such as Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar. It was dubbed into Telugu as Premalayam. Madhuri Dixit won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress and was also nominated in the same category for her critically acclaimed performance in Anjaam which was released that same year.

Plot

The story was adapted from the film Nadiya Ke Paar (1982) also made by Rajshri Productions. It tells the story of two lovers, Prem (Salman Khan) and Nisha (Madhuri Dixit) who are very fun loving, cheerful and full of mischief. Prem's elder brother, Rajesh (Mohnish Behl), is to be married to Nisha's elder sister, Pooja (Renuka Shahane). Prem's uncle (Alok Nath) and Nisha's parents (Anupam Kher and Reema Lagoo) were college friends and when they meet, they arrange Rajesh and Pooja's marriage. During the marriage a lot of fun and mischief happens until it is time for Pooja to leave to her new home.
Prem gets along well with his sister-in-law, and soon they discover that Pooja is pregnant. Pooja's parents are unable to come to the ceremony marking the arrival of the baby so they send Nisha instead. While she is there, she and Prem fall in love with each other. Later, Nisha's parents come over to Pooja's house for a few days and when they have to go, everybody persuades them to stay over for a day. Then when the day for them to leave comes, everybody is sad, especially Prem as he has become very close to Nisha.
Then one day Pooja goes to stay at her parents' house and Prem follows her there. Once they reach the house, Pooja finds out that Prem and Nisha love each other. She promises to get them married and gives Nisha the family necklace. Then the phone rings and Pooja goes to answer it. She is very happy and is hopping down the stairs when her foot accidentally slips and she dies from a head injury after falling off the stairs. Everybody is sad about the accident. Nisha takes good care of Pooja's child and everybody thinks that she will be a great mother to the baby and so Prem's father and Nisha's parents talks about a marriage between Rajesh and Nisha. Nisha overhears her parents talking about her being the daughter-in-law of the house that her sister was from, and she mistakenly thinks that she is getting married to Prem. Later at a preparation ceremony, she finds out that she is marrying Rajesh.
Prem and Nisha agree to sacrifice their love for Rajesh and the baby. At the wedding, Nisha gives Tuffy (Prem's dog) the necklace that her sister had given her together with a letter, to pass it to Prem. Tuffy gives the necklace and letter to Rajesh and he realises that Prem loves Nisha. In the end, he confronts them and Nisha and Prem marry each other.

Mini Biography
Often known as Bollywood's Bad boy, his knack of walking into trouble has overshadowed people's perception of him as an actor. He may have been featured as the bad guy of the industry several times over. But many-a-common-man claims that this macho hunk has a heart made of pure gold.

Born on December 27, 1965 Salman Khan is the son of the legendary writer Salim Khan, who penned many super-hits in the yesteryear's like Sholay, Deewar, and Don. Salman started his acting carrier in 1988 by doing a supporting role in the movie "Biwi Ho To Aisi". The following year he came up with his leading role in the box office romantic hit Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). From there he became the heart throb of Indian cinema.

Following with other box office hits he showed his terrific performance in Saajan (1991), Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Hum Aapke Hain Koun...! (1994), Karan Arjun (1995), Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). His transformations can be sensitive, vulnerable, funny, aggressive and charming as his role demands.

In 1998 he was arrested by the local police from the shooting location of the film Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United (1999), for killing protected wild animals and spent about a week behind the bars. The actor is facing trial in three cases of killing black bucks and chinkaras and another of illegal possession of arms. In September 2002, Salman Khan had hit the headlines after he crashed his Land Cruiser near the American Express bakery in Bandra, killing one man and injuring others.

Being in those roguish behaviors he tried to balance his troubled life with his carrier. In 2003 he gave his emotionally charged performance as playing an obsessed lover in "Tere Naam" that translated into good reviews and a good run at the box office. He has not only managed to revive his career, but also to restore the confidence of his producers and distributors alike.

His work was noticed internationally in the movie Phir Milenge (2004) where he played the role of an AIDS patient. It was well appreciated by the World Health Organization (WHO) for presenting the problems of AIDS patient in today's world.

Personal Quotes
The only person I have hurt is myself.
For me acting, comes straight from the heart. In that sense I don't act at all. I think that to feel the character's pain I have to be myself. Somewhere audiences see that.
On his childhood problems and his father's second marriage to Helen: It was very difficult in the beginning, when everybody was talking about it. My mother just couldn't take it. It hurt her terribly. She used to worry all the time, go in to depression frequently. When she cried, we children used to cry with her.
In life go straight and turn right.
(From a TV-interview) I can get caught in many things but there is one thing I will never get caught in, and that is acting - because I don't act. On screen I am like I am in real life.

Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, she established herself as one of Hindi cinema's leading actresses and accomplished dancers. She appeared in numerous commercial successes and was recognised for several performances as well as dance numbers in various films. Dixit is often cited by the media as one of the most prominent female actresses in Bollywood. In 2008, she was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award by the Government of India.

Early life

Madhuri Dixit is a native of Mumbai, India. She was born Madhuri Shankar Dixit to Shankar and Snehlata Dixit, of a Marathi Brahmin family. Dixit attended Divine Child High School and Mumbai University and wanted to be a microbiologist.[6] She is an accomplished Kathak dancer and trained for eight years.

Film career

Madhuri Dixit made her acting debut in Abodh in 1984. After a few minor and supporting roles in movies like Dayvaan and Vardi, she landed the lead female role in Tezaab (1988), which shot her to stardom, and for which she received her first Filmfare nomination. She then starred in a number of hits that included Ram Lakhan (1989), Parinda (1989), Tridev (1989), Kishen Kanhaiya (1990) and Prahaar (1991). After working in these films with Anil Kapoor, both became good friends.

In 1990, Dixit starred in Indra Kumar's romantic-drama Dil, alongside Aamir Khan. She played the role of Madhu Mehra, a rich and arrogant girl who falls in love with Raja, played by Khan, and later leaves her house to marry him. The film became one of the biggest box-office hits of the year in India, and Dixit's performance earned her the first Filmfare Best Actress Award of her career.

She followed Dil with another line of hits, including Saajan (1991), Beta (1992), Khalnayak (1993), Hum Aapke Hain Kaun...! (1994), and Raja (1995). Dixit's performance in Beta, that of a woman married to an illiterate, well-meaning man who exposes her scheming mother-in-law, won her a second Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Hum Aapke Hain Kaun...! became one of the biggest grossers ever in the history of Hindi cinema. It went on to collect over Rs. 650 million in India and over Rs. 150 million overseas, and won Dixit her third Filmfare Best Actress Award. In that same year, Dixit was also nominated in the same category for her performance in Anjaam, which won her critical acclaim.

After an unsuccessful year in 1996, Dixit appeared as Pooja in Yash Chopra's Dil To Pagal Hai (1997). The film was a major national success, both critically and commercially, and Dixit won her fourth Filmfare Best Actress Award. In that same year, Dixit starred in Prakash Jha's critically acclaimed Mrityudand. The film was known for straddling the boundary between a commercial and an art film. It won the Best Feature Film award at the Cinéma Tout Ecran in Geneva and the Bangkok Film Festival. Dixit's performance in the film landed her the Best Actress award at the annual Star Screen Awards.

Dixit is not only known for her acting skills, but for her dancing skills as well. Her dance sequences, accompanying famous Bollywood songs such as "Ek Do Teen" (from Tezaab), "Humko Aaj Kal Hai" (from Sailaab), "Bada Dukh Deenha" (from Ram Lakhan), "Dhak Dhak" (from Beta), "Chane Ke Khet Mein" (from Anjaam), "Didi Tera Devar Deewana" (from Hum Aapke Hain Kaun...!), "Choli Ke Peechhe" (from Khalnayak), "Akhiyan Milaun" (from Raja), "Mera Piya Ghar Aaya" (from Yaraana), "Kay Sera Sera" (from Pukar), "Maar Daala" (from Devdas), among others, have received abundant critical acclaim.

In 2002, she starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas with Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai. Her performance was applauded and earned her a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. The film attracted worldwide attention and was featured at the Cannes Film Festival.

The following year a film named after her, Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon!, was released in which a woman (played by Antara Mali) aspires to become the new Madhuri Dixit by trying her luck in the Bollywood industry.

On 25 February 2006 she performed on stage for the first time in six years at the Filmfare Awards to music from her last movie Devdas. Her performance was choreographed by Saroj Khan.

Madhuri Dixit has been the muse for the famous Indian painter M.F. Husain who considers her the epitome of womanhood. Hence he made a film named Gaja Gamini (2000) in which Madhuri acted. The film was intended as a tribute to Dixit herself. In this film she can be seen portraying various forms and manifestations of womanhood including the muse of Kalidasa, Leonardo's Mona Lisa, a rebel, and an incarnation of musical euphoria.

On 7 December 2006, Dixit returned to Mumbai with her husband and sons to start filming for Aaja Nachle (2007). The film released in November 2007 and, despite the critics panning it, Dixit's performance was highly appreciated, with the New York Times commenting about her that "she's still got it".

On Women's International Day in 2007, Dixit topped Rediff's list of the Best Bollywood Actresses Ever. In May 2008, she was given a tribute by Indian Film Festival at Los Angeles. In March 2010, The Economic Times named Madhuri Dixit in the list of the "33 women who made India proud".

Personal life

In 1999, Madhuri Dixit married Shriram Madhav Nene, a UCLA-trained cardiovascular surgeon who practices in Denver. Dr. Nene is also from a Marathi Brahmin family. She has two sons, Arin (born on 18 March 2003 in Colorado) and Raayan (born on 8 March 2005 in Colorado).

She has two elder sisters, Rupa and Bharati, and an elder brother, Ajit. Madhuri and her family are based in Denver, Colorado, USA.

During her late 2010 visit to India to host a television dance show she joined social networking site twitter following demands of her fans in India.
